Anna Bajor-Ciciliati

Here are a few brief facts about me:

  • I hold MA in Cultural Studies with specialisation in Theatre Theory from the University of Lodz, Poland;
  • I am a regular contributor of the highly regarded Polish art magazine Didaskalia - gazeta teatralna;.
  • I have a range of publications in my fields of expertise (Anthropology, Theatre, Visual Arts, Popular Culture, Literature).
  • I have spent significant portions of my life in both Portuguese and English speaking countries: 4 years in Brazil and 5 years in Ireland. At the moment I reside in London, United Kingdom.

Immediately after graduation, I spent four years in Brazil, gaining proficiency in the Portuguese language. The extensive research in the local culture which I undertook during my stay in the land of samba, capoeira and bossa-nova resulted in a number of feature texts and translation works published in the Polish cultural press. Beside popularising Brazilian culture in Poland, I was involved in various activities aimed at promotion of the non-Latin cultural heritage in Brazil, including writing the introduction to the first Brazilian edition of the juvenile classic Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery for the Martins Fontes publishing house from São Paulo.

Afterwards, I lived in Italy and Ireland. Presently, I am based in London, United Kingdom. During the recent years, I have translated an English language play for a respected mainstream theatre in Warsaw, worked as an assistant responsible for managing correspondence between the organisers of a Polish art festival and their Brazilian partners, prepared a series of academic translations on theatre and dance and co-authored Polish version of an American guide to the Asperger's sindrome.

Not all that glitters is gold

There are plenty of people out there who consider themselves qualified enough to provide translation services just because they have reached some level of proficiency in a foreign language. Their rates are usually very low, what is quite tempting. But beware: a sloppy translation may have a serious impact on your business image. Professional translating process involves much more than a simple exchange of words for their counterparts in another language. It is often necessary to manipulate whole sentences and paragraphs so that the meaning and tone behind the words remain the same. The idea is to make a translated text sound as if it was originally written in the target language. And this requires not only solid linguistic competencies but also outstanding writing skills, specialist knowledge in the subject area and cultural awareness.

As a professional translator and feature writer with numerous publications in the fields of my specialisation, I have all it takes to provide accurate and highly readable translations which grab reader's attention from the start until the very end. This includes:

  • full understanding of textual dynamics,
  • excellent notion of style,
  • eye to detail and concern with integrity (both analytical and synthetical approach),
  • first-rate research skills.

Moreover, as an established freelance professional, I am fully dedicated to my job, organised and dependable, so you can feel confident I will deliver high quality results in a timely manner.
